Created in 1909 by Anna Jarvis as a way to honor all mothers, this commemoration quickly caught the attention of flower and card retailers as a way of making money. It is now a multimillion dollar business opportunity. Some believe that the expression “Honor thy Mother” has been lost amid the ease of sending a pre-printed card, e-card, or Tele-Floral with a card reading “For My Special Mom.”

Many mothers might better appreciate a long talk, visit, house cleaning, some yard work, or a nice home-cooked meal. If you are a kid, clean your room! Thank your mother for all the hard work she does for you.

And . . . Happy Mothers' Day!
