NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
Long before Christopher Columbus discovered The Americas, Native peoples lived here. Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, mostly-European settlers began to colonize this land. And we know what happened: the 'white man' had his way, and the Native people lost their land, and often their way of life.
There is much to be sad about, but there are some bright spots. Take the Mesquaki Tribe: they never gave up the hope of regaining their land near Tama, Iowa, and they achived that goal by purchasing land there...currently, they own 8000+ acres! the Meskwaki, were the first and one of the few Native tribes to have returned home. On July 13, 2007, the Meskwaki celebrated 150 years as a sovereign nation. There is still way too much social injustice toward Native Americans, but our neighbors, the Meskwaki, deserve our admiration.
COVID-19
+As we head into the fourth year of dealing with COVID-19, experts seem to agree that the virus, SARS-CoV-2, that has been dominating our lives, isn't going away any time soon. Viruses constantly change through mutation and SARS-CoV-2 has consistently mutated over the course of the pandemic, resulting in variants that are different from the original virus.
+According to report by Stuart Cohen, chief of infectious diseases at UC Davis CA Health, it appears that the new variants are no more dangerous than the original Omicron virus. Currently, the dominant variant nationwide is HV.1.
+Reported by CovidActNow/US COVID TRACKER website, as of 11/25/23, here is survey of Iowa counties: DAVIS: 18% vaccinated; 10% of hospital beds have Covid cases
JOHNSON: 23% vaccinated; 1.4% hospital beds have Covid cases
CLINTON: 16% vaccinated; 1.3% hospital beds have Covid cases
