What to do if ICE contacts YOU

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing federal immigration laws in the United States. Their primary focus is to ensure national security by investigating immigration-related crimes and enforcing immigration regulations. ICE agents have the authority to conduct enforcement actions, such as arrests, detentions, and raids.

We are experiencing many changes these days, and these can make us worried and anxious. It is important to be prepared for all situations, particularly those involving law enforcement.

Here are the basic guidelines, for any situation, if you are approached by ICE officers:

  • Be calm and composed

  • Know your legal rights

  • Never run or resist

  • Avoid showing false documents

  • Don't sign anything that you don't understand

  • Make a written record of your encounter

  • Get legal assistance

  • If approached at home, invite a witness to be present

  • Have these types of ID (identification) available:

Passport, Green Card, Driver's License, Employment Authorization Doc (EAD), Social Security Card, Consular ID

We can't always control what scares us, but we can be prepared.
